The TAMPOA Website - What It Could Be

The TAMPOA Website is a disgrace for an Association with a budget the size of the TAMPOA budget. It's not that the design is that bad. It's that the information on the site is often out of date. What a service the site could be to TAMPOA members if TAMPOA staff would take the time to update it on a more frequent basis. Currently, the website only gets additions about once every quarter when TAMPOA gets around to sending out a newsletter along with the quarterly assessment bills. However, the bills for the fall quarter were sent out more than two months ago, but the newsletter has not been updated since summer. When the newsletter is updated, much of it often reads like the society page.

There could be so much more current information on the website. For example, TAMPOA just announced (on November 22 by mail) how members could run for the board and the date of the annual membership meeting (January 29, 2007). This information, even if required by law to be mailed, should also have been posted on the website. The TAMPOA bylaws are not on the website. The mega page document covering all the TAMPOA organization information provided to purchasers should be on the website. It is not. All the, often contradictory, "crisis letters" President Tukey and Secretary Ryles have sent out should be on the website so that members who may not have taken an immediate interest in the Southard Street controversy, but now are interested, can have a have a better perspective on the situation.

The website could be used for sorely needed better communication with TAMPOA members. TAMPOA could establish a members' listserv so that members could hold on line discussions about current issues. The board could monitor this and would certainly benefit from the feedback. If needed, parts of the site could be limited to TAMPOA members only.

A simple start for improving the website would be to update it at least weekly. How hard can that be?

Had the website been the vehicle it should have been, this blog would not exist. Isn't it ironic that TAMPOA members, as well as Shipyard residents, pay thousands of dollars a year for services from their Association, including a website, but have to rely on a free blog for real news about their association?

your silence re: running for the board is deafening. could it be that you are not an owner and thus not a member of tampoa even though you imply that you are in your posts? could it be that you are misrepresenting yourself?
are you a voting member of tampoa? be honest now. inquirering minds want to know!

Some good ideas but in general poorly presented and very critical just for the sake of being negative. You do have a very high opinion of yourself.

I feel for you Conchette. My blog is plagued by comments like the first anonymous poster.
That poster sounds like a huge d*ckhead - and I wish he/she would stop ruining our island with that attitude.
Conchette, you are doing an amazingly good job of keeping everyone informed about what is going on at TAMPOA. The public would never know most of what you say, and if not for you, I would believe that Truman Annex didn't have a single good islander.
It looks like the gate fiasco isn't going to die - as TAMPOA doesn't seem to get it. The Navy doesn't want a gate, the residents of Key West don't want a gate, the County does not want a gate.
This is really about controlling the Truman Waterfront. TAMPOA shold realize that their property ends at the property line. They shouldn't dictate or intimidate the city into their wierd vision for Key West.
GO CONCHETTE GO!!!
(Oh, and anonymous, I know you will post some "master" attitude - why don't you get your head unstuck from the gate...you look like a fool)

well now you are publishing cayo dave's vulgarities and name calling. i assume you agree with him and his position re truman annex. he has published that he wants the city to spend as much money as it takes for them to obtain all the streets in truman annex and to remove all the gates. he does this with the understanding that he owns no property in key west and thus pays no taxes to the city. he is thus an example of chutzpah as well as being a hypocrite. he certainly doesn't mind spending other people's money without contributing anything other than his childish name calling and curses.
is this your position as well?
why don't you comment on his position since you're publishing it?

Anonymous - First off, I will repeat, YOU DO NOT KNOW ME OR MY FINANCIAL DETAILS.
Secondly, your attitude that recommends silencing non-property owners is dusgusting. You sound like a slave owner. Or maybe you have become use to the title of "master".
Either way, you are wrong.
Are you suggesting that only property owners should vote in elections? Revolutions have been started for that ideology.
And yes, I would like to see all the gates of Truman Annex torn down - if emminent domain is used. However, if emminent domain is not used, then keep your ridiculous gates. Maybe you'll feel safer from the "riff-raff". And frankly, I'm starting to believe that the citizens of Key West are far better off keeping you caged up...wierdo.
Mostly, I want the Truman Waterfront to become a vibrant, multi-use part of the City of Key West. I do not want the Manics in Truman Annex to blackmail the City into their plans for the property.

I Am a property owner in Key West. Luckily, I am no where near your "kingdom" of Truman Annex. I think you respond here for no other reason than to hear yourself speak. Seems that is something common in Truman Annex. If there isn't any publicity, let's start some....ie post as an anonymous on a blog or put a full page ad (and spend the member's money in doing so) in the local paper.

It is easy to sit back and snipe at someone when hiding behind the cloak of anonymity. I understand why Conchette does it since she has to live among all you folks who would drown if you went outside in the rain, what with your noses all up in the air and all.

As someone who actually gets out of my own neighborhood, I will tell you that I have yet to meet ANYONE outside of Truman Annex who wants a new gate, the old gates, or even Truman Annex for that matter. Since many of you aren't even homesteaded residents, I resent you and your board trying to tell me what is best for my city.

Why don't you all take a cat amd move to Maine with Tukey. There are plenty of ferals around. While you are at it, since you are all so civic-minded, take a homeless guy with you too.

Bruce Kelly

PS, I signed up as an anonymous as i am about to go be in the Christmas parade and have to jump in the shower.

so bruce i guess that you don't have a problem with eminent domain or the taking of other people's property. you may not like gates but i won't tell you what you can or can't have on your own property.
i don't like the city wasting my tax dollars on suits that they can't win. i don't know what your feeling is about the duck tours or the money wasted on that but i do.
too bad that your attitude is not live and let live. property rights are important but it depends on whose ox is being gorged. it apparently is not yours (yet). but well that's your attitude and well, too bad.

oh, by the way i am homesteaded here, live here full time, and work here. i resent the commission's bad faith negotiations, their falsehoods, and their high handed attitude that they can take whatever they want and thumb their nose at laws and signed written agreements. this is still a country of law and contracts need to be honored.
truman annex is not dictating anything but only what happens to our property.
we have undeniable evidence that the streets are the property of the residents of truman annex and were bought and paid for. they are private property. i am sorry that the city did not obtain the annex when they had the opportunity to do so but that is something for you to take up with the city.

Mr Kelly,
You stated that you own property in Key West. Forgive me if after seeing how untrustworthy our commission has been, that I have become cynical when I hear something said and tend to try to confirm facts. I therefore looked up the county's web site and found no property listed with your name attached to it.
This city has lied repeatedly to us and other citizens. I hope that this tendency has not become the norm with everyone in Key West. I do respect the fact that you signed your response and hope that you had a nice time at the parade.

to cayo dave
please vote as often and for whatever and whoever you want to vote for. that is not the issue.
your constant whine for the city to spend whatever it takes from our taxes to pay for spurious suits and eminent domain is the issue. you don't pay any city tax (i do). it is height of hypocrisy to urge the city to pay whatever it takes to obtain the streets of truman annex when you contribute nothing financially but only hot air and vulgarities.
i take solace and count my blessings that i don't know you.
the city has the ability to access the waterfront using city streets any time it wants to. tampoa is not "blackmailing" anyone. they are protecting their property rights which is something you apparently know very little about.

Well guess what you nosy jerk, I DO own property in Key West. Not that its any of your damn business, but it happens to be in my wife's name for reasons that are NOYFB. Considering that I put up the money and I make the payments, it is as much my home as my wife's.

I find it ironic that you chastise me when you don't even have the balls to sign your posts after attempting to eviscerate anyone who disagrees with you. What a piece of work you are. As far as I am concerned, you, your fearless leader the cat theif, and all of the other damn snowbirds in Truman Annex could all leave tomorrow (for good I hope) and I would shed not a single tear.

the city was coerced into an unworkable agreement that you and your spendthrift board want to keep throwing back at everyone. When the Navy says "no", you seem to ignore the fact that if the feds want Southard (and Eaton and Front and Caroline) totally open, they will get their way. No amount of the cat thief's money or anyone else's will trump that. Your group has made its own bed starting with the coersion, continuing with the ridiculous full page ads and culminating with the ID incident at the gate which was a VERY thinly veiled attempt at racial profiling (yes, in case you weren't aware, they were predominately IDing people of color). The whole thing offends me. Key West has an extremely low crime rate. Your "rent-a-cops" aren't going to protect you. I will absolutely guarantee you that right now, at 11:45 on a Saturday night, I could get in my car and BS my way through the gate if I so chose. I really don't want to because the stench coming from your neighborhood makes me want to barf.

Well it looks as if name calling and mean spiritness is not limited to cayo dave. I guess bk is one of dave's "friends" if not cayo dave himself. You were the one to identify yourself if indeed you weren't using a nom de plume.
The aggreement was made like any agreement. In all contracts there are pressures that exist during negotiations. Indeed if "coersion" was a cause for dismissal of a contract there would be no contracts.
The issue is property rights and if you or your wife do own property you should be sensitive to it.
Seeing your lack of logical thinking, juvenile behavior and just name calling i am sure that i have just wasted my time. C'est la vie.

PS. Try to act and write like the educated adult you profess to be.

That is an absolute lie, made up
by the Tampoa haters. The Tampoa
guards are among the nicest folks
in the keys, accusing them of
racism is sickening.

Oh, so I have to have a phone number listed in the phone book too? I wasn't aware that was another of your rules.

You keep talking about name calling and mean-spiritedness yet you spew the same crap you accuse others of spewing. You have called me a liar, ignorant, and juvenile. In the meantime, you are denying a very verifiable fact that the entire incident at the gate was racially motivated. If it quacks and walks like a duck, it is likely really a duck.

Coersion is coersion. "Negotiation" is NOT the same thing. TAMPOA threatened to attempt to hold up the transfer of the waterfront area to the city unless the city signed away the street. There is still considerable legal doubt that the city even had the right to do this, especially given that the city attorney at the time is a known idiot.

I still say you should get out from behind your emerald gates and go talk to people who live here, property owners or not, and see that my assertion that no one wants gates at Truman Annex escept a few elitist snobs who live there. I have several friends who live in TA and the Shipyards and they are pretty much disgiusted with the attitudes you embrace as well as your board and especially the President of your board, the cat thief. The gates don't do squat and one can always get on. I still own a gate key from a friend who formerly lived there. Perhaps you should now hysterically run out and change all the locks.

Now, since we will never agree, I will bow out of this conversation as I am pretty busy remodeling the house I don't own. Perhaps when its done, I can even put in a land line so you can look me up and call me. In the meantime, I think "getting a life so you don't have to spend all day stalking other people" should be pretty high on your list of priorities.

It was written:

This statement is a very good
illustration of the ignorance
being expressed. Other than a
couple of Tampoa haters statements,
there is NO "verifiable fact" that
there was anything racial at all.
Quack all you like, it won't
change reality. All you are doing
is showing your prejudices.

There were statements from a couple
of people who made comments like
"three cars with white people in
them were flagged through, but
then they stopped a car with a
black man in it". Have you ever
stopped to think that most of the
cars going through the gate HAVE
ACCESS STICKERS ON THEIR CARS
and are waved right through?

But of course those who show such
hatred for the good people of
TAMPOA have to come up with
SOME excuse for their hatreds.
The fact that Tampoa residents
have done a tremendous amount of
good things for this city, and
want nothing back but respect
for their property rights, is
hard to counteract. Have to start
throwing phoney racial accusations
in there to justify the hatred.

I really pity those who move into
Key West with such hatreds. They
are bound to die from heart attacks
long before their time...
